The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has again landed itself in soup with a sponsor. With the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill being cleared in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, it now awaits the signature of the President of India in order to be enacted as a law. It will ban all fantasy platforms, including Dream11 & My11Circle, and any real-money gaming platforms from functioning and advertising. The India Cricket Team, which wears the Dream11 logo, won't be permitted to do so. BCCI is subject to a penalty if the India Cricket Team wears the logo. Now, with the Asia Cup around the corner, the BCCI is holding out for the signing of the bill into law. Fantasy gaming platform Dream11 replaced embattled ed-tech giant Byju's in 2023 to acquire the India Cricket Team's top sponsorship agreement for Rs 358 crore or Rs 3 crore per home game and Rs 1 crore for away matches. Fantasy gaming platform My11Circle acquired the Indian Premier League (IPL) associate sponsorship agreement last year for Rs 625 crore for a five-year period. The Men's India Cricket Team will play in the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE from September 9. The women's team will play Australia at home from Sep 14. At present, both the teams can wear jerseys without a front logo. In ICC events, the squads can have only a sponsor's logo on the sleeves. Here is what a BCCI official told InsideSport: “We are aware of the situation and are in touch with the concerned authorities and partners. At the moment, it’s not a law. But as per the bill, it doesn’t look like the men’s and women’s teams will be able to carry the logo. We are in discussion with the legal team,” Read also: Why was Shreyas Iyer not selected in 2025 Asia Cup squad? Reports reveals shocking claims Cricket sponsorship set to drop It is not the first instance where a BCCI sponsor has gotten into trouble. As much as it will not be a challenge for the BCCI to find an alternative sponsor in the place of Dream11 and My11Circle, the IPL teams will experience a significant drop in revenues. The BCCI already prohibited crypto and betting advertisements in IPL. Nevertheless, fantasy apps covered most of the sponsorship agreements among the teams. Whereas Vision11 sponsors Chennai Super Kings, Dream11 sponsors the remaining nine teams in IPL. Fantasy apps are also promoted by cricketers except IPL teams and the BCCI. They will experience a reduction in their endorsement contracts. Industry experts opine that cricket would not suffer due to the Online Gaming bill. “Cricket is huge in India, and there won’t be any dearth of sponsors for Indian cricket. However, the personal sponsorship market can shrink because of this bill. Fan engagement will also be affected,” Vidushpat Singhania, a lawyer told PTI.
