Senior India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced concerns regarding the communication of senior players’ roles within the national team, particularly with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The veteran spinner highlighted the absence of clarity from the management as India plans ahead for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Ashwin’s comments come in the wake of Shubman Gill replacing Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain, signaling a shift towards younger players. On his YouTube channel, Ashwin observed, “When we examine the selection process, what are the selectors trying to show us? They’re showing us that we’re moving forward and, in the path forward, there are two people who are at the back end of their careers… However, the way we handle them needs to be better.” He stressed that decisions based solely on age or incoming talent often overlook the importance of experience. Ashwin said, “It’s easy, from a personal, organisational, or selector’s perspective, to say, ‘They’re old, it’s time to move on.’ But why do we make this judgment? It’s for two reasons: one, they’re getting older and may need to retire, and two, there’s an influx of young talent, especially in the IPL that you feel they can replace these older players." Ashwin felt that a "solid conversation" is required between the younger team and the seniors. Currently, if Kohli and Rohit are not in the helm for the future, then at least they can train young players for the future- tactically guide them for certain situations. He questioned whether the management had clearly communicated succession plans. Ashwin said, “Ideally, these discussions should have occurred earlier, perhaps when they announced their retirement after the T20 World Cup. Instead, a lot of uncertainty remains, and when decisions are made without clear communication, it invites unnecessary speculation." While acknowledging the potential of Kohli and Rohit in the 2027 World Cup, Ashwin urged structured communication to recognize their contributions and maintain team coherence. He concluded, “If they do make it to that World Cup, it will be a remarkable achievement, and both deserve immense respect for their commitment."
