The Indian Premier League seems to have lost the fair balance between bat and ball, and now, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also voiced his opinions on the bowlers' assault. In the early days of the league, 180s seemed decent to defend, while now 250 looks like a minnow score! With the evolution of rules, it has mostly benefitted the batters more in comparison to the batters in this league. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted the issue, saying that bowlers might seriously need to afford personal psychologists for matches. Recently, Ashwin had a conversation with Prasanna Agoram, a sports analyst, where the latter asked if bowlers have become defensive or not. Ash said, "You said bowlers are becoming defensive. I want to talk about that. I think bowlers will soon have to be accompanied by personal psychologists. I genuinely mean that. Okay, people say bowlers are becoming defensive. Let that argument stand. But in several instances, bowling has literally become impossible. On certain grounds, you can't keep the stumps in play. You mentioned full tosses-but (Yuzvendra) Chahal bowled full tosses to Sai Sudharsan and got away with singles (on Tuesday in Ahmedabad). He added, In fact, a full toss isn't always a bad ball. On some pitches, deliveries that land on the wicket actually make it easier for batters. We all thought full tosses were easier to hit when we were young, but on certain surfaces, the ball pitches and comes onto the bat better than a full toss." Even in the latter, RCB chased 175 in just 16.2 overs. SunRisers Hyderabad smashed 286 against Rajasthan Royals, while Delhi Capitals recovered from 8/3 to chase 210 against LSG. Punjab Kings posted 244 but won by just 11 runs against Gujarat Titans. The Impact Player rule, introduced in 2024, has fueled this run fest, pushing the average IPL score to 189 and making high-scoring thrillers the new normal.
