Ravichandran Ashwin might turn out to be the first Indian cricketer to play in the Big Bash League according to reports. Ashwin recently revealed his retirement from the IPL, which makes it possible for him to play in overseas T20 leagues around the world. The 38-year-old is currently in discussions with Cricket Australia, and might play in BBL 2026. According to Cricbuzz, Ravichandran Ashwin may become the first big-name cricketer to feature in the Big Bash League in Australia. Ashwin, 38, went public with his IPL retirement in August with a focus on eyeing player-cum-coaching opportunities overseas leagues. The Indian red-ball great has been negotiating with several stakeholders around the world, Cricket Australia being the latest. According to the report, Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg is in talks with Ashwin regarding the chances of the Indian star spinner flaunting his skills in the BBL. Ashwin subsequently confirmed the same to Cricbuzz. Here is what Greenberg told Cricbuzz: “To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He was still able to play in the ILT20, even though the majority of marquee deals were already done. The Big Bash therefore provides him with the earlier chance, and the 38-year-old could play in the 2026 edition from December. Ashwin joining BBL 2026 would be a huge fillip to the profile of the T20 League. Cricket Australia have been accused time and again for not having enough star power in the competition. Numerous Australian icons have skipped most of the matches in the tournament, as the BBL conflicts with the Australian Test summer.
