India’s seamer Arshdeep Singh has reiterated the unique prestige that Test cricket carries, distinguishing it sharply from white-ball formats like the IPL. Despite being part of India’s Test squad, the 26-year-old from Punjab has yet to make his debut, with injuries during the England tour further delaying his opportunity. Arshdeep, ICC T20I Cricketer of the Year, has become a key figure in India’s limited-overs squads, often keeping fellow pacer Mohammed Siraj out of the side. Speaking on Breakfast with Champions, he explained the enduring value of red-ball cricket. He said, “You get a different level of respect from Test cricket. People remember you as someone who played 50 T20Is, but in Test cricket, what people remember is, in 1992, he bowled a brilliant four-over spell. Even if you don’t get a wicket, people still remember it." He emphasized the importance of nurturing red-ball skills alongside white-ball success. Arshdeep added, “I keep saying keep focussing on the red ball as well. There is lot of money and fame in the IPL and T20, but the craze for red-ball cricket is going down. You play T20, one-day, but remember playing red ball is also fun. After you send down 20 overs you don’t know which part of your body is hurting. That is a different feeling. Now that I have come back after experiencing Test cricket — I didn’t play, saw it from outside how it is and how it isn’t, how much hard work it takes, level of mental toughness required." He said “There was a belief that we will win, they will have to score and if we bowl with discipline we will create chances. That happened in the beginning. We got a wicket in the second over. The belief and the trust only grew from there." He also lauded his teammates’ resilience, especially Siraj. Arshdeep concluded, “Emotions are bound to be involved, especially when all the matches are going till the fifth day. The body is very exhausted. Last match of the series with all the matches going till the last day, but to still bring that energy into this format is commendable effort. Especially the way Siraj bowled.”
