As far as the Pakistan Cricket Board is concerned, it's pretty much certain that it will dispense with head coach Jason Gillespie. The former Australia cricketer was engaged as a Test coach back in April 2024, and later, he was handed the baton in the white-ball as well after Gary Kirsten resigned. Under Gillespie, Pakistan suffered a humiliating Test series defeat to Bangladesh but made a stunning comeback against England, winning the series 2-1. His first assignment in the limited-overs was the white-ball tour to Australia. Pakistan won the ODI series 2-1, but in the T20Is, the hosts were on the driving seat, and the third game is yet to come. However, the Men in Green have shown a lot of improvement, and it is a pity that due to his contract issues, Gillespie will have to leave. Aqib Javed was recently appointed as convenor of the men's cricket selection committee. He has long been the first choice for the task of handling the team. ESPNcricinfo says the board can publicize the decision on Monday, following the third of Pakistan's three T20I games against Australia. A working theory here is that the board wasn't keen on hiking Gillespie's salary despite promoting him to the role of white-ball coach and that had a bearing on his sacking. The former cricketer was reportedly asked to sign the contract with added responsibility with no change in pay. Gillespie wouldn't accept such an offer and had rejected it. However, the 49-year-old stepped forward to say that he has spent each and every day that his contract demanded him to be in Pakistan, and apart from this, Gillespie was part of Shaheen's Darwin tour without pay as an act of goodwill. Gillespie was expected to continue at least till the Champions Trophy next month, as PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi had spoken extremely well of his appointment, regarding him and Kirsten as 'best possible coaches'. However, neither stayed beyond twelve months. Aaqib, meanwhile, has experience winning back-to-back championships in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), but there have been instances of his team finishing at the bottom of the table, and that includes Lahore Qalandars' performance this year.
