India's batting lineup struggled against the swinging and seaming deliveries from New Zealand's pacers in challenging conditions. The first day of the ongoing Test match was a complete washout without even the toss. On the second day, Indian captain Rohit Sharma chose to bat first despite the bowling-friendly weather conditions at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Unfortunately, this decision didn’t pay off, and India was bowled out for just 46 runs. Former India cricketer Anil Kumble expressed his dissatisfaction with the management’s decision to send Virat Kohli in at No. 3 on Day 2 of the first Test. With India's batting line-up suffering a major collapse, Kumble pointed out that the team missed Cheteshwar Pujara’s steadying influence. He emphasized that while India seemed intent on attacking, they needed someone like Pujara to adopt a more cautious approach who could have held the other end. For the number three position, someone like Cheteshwar Pujara, who did so well for so many years playing there. 100 Test matches because he would have been there today, then he wouldn't have gone looking to hit the ball, I think. He would allow the ball to come on and that's where you miss someone like that. Kind of approach today. And India is certainly in a spot of bother here.” For nearly a decade, Cheteshwar Pujara was India's reliable No. 3 in Test cricket, but the selectors moved on from his post to the 2023 World Test Championship final. Later, Shubman Gill took over the No. 3 spot and so far he has performed well at this position. However, it's important to note that Gill missed the first Test due to a stiff neck, which led to the reshuffling of the batting order.
