Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka's seasoned all-rounder, recently vented his frustration on social media over the limited number of Test matches the Sri Lankan men's cricket team will play in 2025. Sri Lanka is to play just four Tests throughout the year and two of those before mid-February. During the current WTC cycle 2023-25, Sri Lanka has played 13 Tests to date. Only Bangladesh and South Africa have played fewer Tests, at 12 matches each. According to the Future Tours Program, Sri Lanka will play their remaining Test matches for the current WTC cycle before June 2025. The side will host Bangladesh for two Tests that are part of the new WTC 2025-27 cycle. However, this is the period that Sri Lanka is supposed to play the least number of Tests with only eight matches planned for the two years 2026 and 2027. Absolutely shocking to hear that srilanka is only playing 4 test matches this entire year including the aus tests this month @ICC . — Angelo Mathews (@Angelo69Mathews) January 6, 2025 Also Read | UK MPs Push England to Boycott Afghanistan CT 2025 Match Big Three to Play More Tests Mathews' frustration follows reports that the ICC, India, Australia, and England Cricket Boards are deliberating on introducing a two-tier Test system. This will enable the "big three" to have more Test matches between them. The Age reported today that ICC Chairman Jay Shah is going to meet Cricket Australia Chairman Mike Baird and England's Richard Thompson this month to talk about the said proposal. An official from BCCI stated that a two-tier Test system was proposed back in 2016 but the BCCI, Zimbabwe, and Bangladesh rejected the idea saying that it may bring down revenue for the small cricketing countries. Fewer test matches are going to hit Sri Lanka's players and fans, and they might feel a lot of change because the test cricket might not develop well in Sri Lanka.
