India may struggle to select 11 players out of the squad for the series opener at Headingley, Leeds. The first Test of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 will commence on Friday, June 20, prior to which India will have to make plenty of difficult decisions. These decisions are likely to be based on the nature of the Headingley surface. India A took part in an unofficial two-match series against the England Lions, followed by an intra-squad game against the senior Indian team. Both matches featured several impressive individual performances. In the unofficial Tests, players like KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, and Anshul Kamboj stood out with strong displays. Similarly, in the intra squad match, the likes of Shardul Thakur, Sarfaraz, Rahul, and others played well. Further, India's core squad has names such as Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish, Shardul, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and a couple of others, whose picks would be challenging and are strictly based on playing conditions. Except for the final Test match, which will be held at The Oval, other grounds may assist pacers considerably. Particularly with the Dukes balls, pacers will never be out of the game, even with the worn-out ball. Dukes balls swing late after becoming old and create a tough time for the batters. Headingley generally has a lot to offer to the pacers, which results in low scores and collapses. Therefore, it may not be a surprise if the teams are bundled out early soon in some cases in the series, such as it did in Ashes 2019 and in India's tour of England in 2021. Since the first Test could see overcast conditions, it would mean India heading in with a all-seam attack, which would also mean benching Jadeja and Kuldeep to choose Nitish and Shardul. With the series unfolding, the spinners would have more opportunities.
