When Alyssa Healy walked out onto the pitch for Australia against India on March 1, 2026, it was the last time the fans saw her in international colors. Earlier in January, the 35-year-old seasoned cricketer confirmed that the multi-format home series against India would be her last assignment. After 16 years in top level cricket, Healy had decided that it was time for her to step down. Healy said: “It’s with mixed emotions that the upcoming India series will be my last for Australia." Healy's statement was frank and unambiguous. “I’m still passionate about playing for Australia but I’ve somewhat lost that competitive edge that’s kept me driven since the start, so the time feels right to call it a day." Healy elected not to be a part of the T20I series due to the ICC Women's T20 World Cup coming up later in the year in the UK. “Knowing I won’t be going to the T20 World Cup this year and the limited preparation time the team has, I won’t be part of the T20s against India, but I’m excited to have the opportunity to finish my career and captain the ODI and Test side at home against India, one of the biggest series on the calendar for us." She is also an eight-time World Champion, six T20 World Cups and two ODI World Cups-the most World Titles any player has won in the history of the sport. From Promise to Dominance The early stages of Healy’s career showed flashes of brilliance but were marked with inconsistency as she moved between the opening and middle order. After the 2017 ODI World Cup, however, Australia finally backed her as their full-time opener and never looked back. Between 2017 and 2023, Healy scored more than 50 runs an innings while also scoring at a strike-rate of over 100, changing the way Australian batting attacked the opposition from the first ball of the innings to ensure dominance in the powerplay. In 2021, Lanning said: “She cares a lot about the people around her. Over the last few years especially, she’s been able to read the group really well and understand what we need at certain times. She’s always looking out for people in her own way, especially the younger kids that come in. A lot of that is behind the scenes – she’s always making sure they’re settling in OK, and fitting in nicely." She added: “None of it is to get recognition … she just really cares about us having a good team environment, and wants people to be enjoying themselves.” Trust and support was the backbone of her leadership. Healy answered the call by scoring 50, an innings that epitomized her courage as an individual. More Than Just Numbers It is not possible to describe Healy’s illustrious career solely on the numbers that she has achieved as an individual. Healy has helped popularize the sport of women’s cricket, as the sport was not seen as an important sport when Healy first started out as a cricketer. Healy is an inspiration for young women, as she has helped many young women pick up the bat and gloves, as she is an inspiration for young women everywhere as a role model for the sport of women’s cricket. Healy has redefined the role of the keeper-batter, as she is an indispensable part of the team, not only behind the wickets, but also with the bat. Her last innings on March 1, 2026, was a masterclass on what she had delivered to the sport in the last 16 years - fearless batting, sharp keeping, and inspiring leadership. As she walked off the field for the last time, she left behind a record book that is a testament to her achievements and a team that is well-prepared to face the future. Alyssa Healy may have said goodbye to the international stage, but her legacy will continue to inspire the sport in the years to come.
