Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will commence on March 22 and the teams have already formed their rosters for the two-month cricketing stint. The mega auction in November 2024 resulted in a complete overhaul of the majority of the teams. India batsman Ajinkya Rahane found himself returning to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after playing the 2022 season with them. The seasoned player also envisioned himself as the captain for the season of IPL 2025. And with that, the right-hander will become the first Indian player to lead three different IPL teams and the fourth player to do so overall. Sri Lankan former captains Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene and Australian batsman Steve Smith are the other players who have captained three IPL teams. The 36-year-old Mumbai batsman has led Rising Pune Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals till now. With him being named as KKR captain, he is ready to make the record on the season's opening night against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Saturday. Mysore emphasized just how hectic an IPL season is with so much pressure to contend with and promises to keep. The management felt they couldn't put all that onus on the shoulders of the young lad Iyer. "IPL is quite an intense tournament. We think very well of Venkatesh Iyer, but at the same time, [captaincy] is taxing on a youngster. We have seen lots of people facing challenges with it as they go forward. It takes a very steady hand, a lot of maturity, and experience, which we felt Ajinkya brings with him. In the IPL, Rahane has been a consistent player for so many years; he has done a really good job for the teams, he has played for in the league. He has done a really good job as a skipper, as a leader, and as a player as well. So far in his IPL career, he has played 185 matches and has scored 4642 runs at an average of 30.14. He has also scored two centuries as well. KKR will also expect the same kind of performance in the IPL 2025.
