Mumbai cricket team veteran Ajinkya Rahane has revealed that he will relinquish captaincy duties before the next domestic season. The veteran skipper guided the team to an all-time record Ranji Trophy victory in 2023-24 and then to an Irani Cup victory in 2024. Justifying his move, Rahane stated that it was time for Mumbai to develop a new leader. Going on social media site X, Rahane explained that it was an honour of a lifetime to take Mumbai to championship and title victories. The veteran explained that although it was the time for the team to bring up a new face as captain, he went on to add that he would keep working his best for the team in a playing capacity. The highlights of the same are being a winner of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022/23, Duleep Trophy 2022/23, Ranji Trophy 2023/24 and the Irani Cup in 2024. It should be noted here that Rahane has already captained India in T20Is, ODIs and Tests. Rahane was appointed captain of KKR for IPL 2025. Rahane, playing his 19th first-class campaign this season, has been omitted from West Zone's Duleep Trophy team. Shardul Thakur, his Mumbai colleague, has been appointed captain instead. Ayush Mhatre, has meanwhile been appointed captain of the Mumbai team in the current Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament. With Rahane relinquishing the captaincy role, Mumbai have ample choice to select his replacement. The likely candidates for the captaincy role would be Shardul and Shreyas Iyer.
