Former India cricketer and current Head Coach Gautam Gambhir believes that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are still very much in the frame for the 2027 ODI World Cup provided they continue to perform at the highest level. Speaking in an interview with CNN-News18, Gambhir addressed the future of the two veterans following their respective exits from T20Is and Tests. "November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away. And I've always said one thing – if you keep performing, age is just a number," Gambhir said. Kohli and Rohit have both stepped away from certain formats, but remain available for ODI selection. Their experience and current form remain key factors in India’s roadmap for the next few years. "Look, it's still a long way away. We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament that is going to happen in India, which is in February-March," he pointed out, while reiterating that performances, not age, should determine selection. He admitted that while having one captain across formats is ideal, it’s not always practical in today’s packed cricket calendar. "Ideally, as a coach, it is much easier to work with a guy if you have one captain for all formats but that hardly happens because you've got to realise in today's day and age, you can't have a captain captaining for 12 months a year," Gambhir said. He highlighted the importance of managing mental fatigue, especially among younger players who may be burdened with constant leadership duties. "Imagine putting a young guy, captaining sides for 12 months, is putting a lot of toll on his mental health and on his game as well. Ideally, it is one but in today's day and age, it is always better to have two because that pressure can be distributed and it gets much easier for a player to be free when he's not captaining," he explained. But for players like Rohit and Kohli, the door to 2027 remains open, as long as the performances continue.
