Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced that their head coach, Jonathan Trott, will conclude his tenure after the conclusion of the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup. The ACB further announced that they will part ways with their batting coach, Andrew Puttick, after his contract ends on December 31. Puttick took over the batting coach role in January earlier this year, while Jonathan Trott took the head coach duties back in July 2022. Trott has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in Afghanistan’s transition in white-ball cricket. From an underdog to a team that plays fearless cricket in the white-ball tournaments currently. Trott was appointed for an 18-month contract initially, but his coaching style and performance helped him receive a 12-month extension in 2024 and another in 2025, guiding Afghanistan to several memorable moments in international cricket. Just as teams evolve, so do their leadership and strategic needs," the board said in a statement. "No international side remains under a single coach forever, and this change marks a new chapter for Afghanistan as the board continues building toward long-term excellence. This decision comes as part of ACB's long-term strategic planning for the next phase of the national team's growth." Trott has been a game-changer for Afghanistan, especially with his tactics during the recent ICC tournaments. He helped Afghanistan qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean last year. They defeated teams like New Zealand and Australia at the league stage and Super-Eight. Back in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, they were almost on the verge of qualifying for the semi-final but their unfortunate loss to Australia knocked them out. However, they picked out outstanding victories over registered stunning wins over England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in the league phase. During Trott’s tenure, they even registered ODI series victories over South Africa and Bangladesh. Trott showed gratitude for this role and also expressed that it’s been a privilege to Afghanistan National Team and to witness their emotions on the field. As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Trott said: "It has been a privilege to work with the Afghanistan National Team and to witness their passion, resilience, and hunger to achieve greatness," Trott said. "I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I will always remain a supporter of Afghan cricket. I wish the team and the Afghan people continued success in the years ahead." Trott’s eyeing the upcoming 2026 T20 World for the team, finding some good talents and making a solid squad for the tournament. The upcoming T20 World Cup is likely to be played between February 7 to March 8.
