Serum Institute of India Owner and CEO Adar Poonawalla has confirmed his interest in buying Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the Indian Premier League (IPL) team. Earlier in June, there were reports that British spirits giant Diageo PLC, the current owner of RCB, was keen on selling the team. Now that Poonawalla has confirmed his interest, the negotiations have picked up pace for the IPL 2026 season. Diageo To Sell RCB Post IPL 2025 Win RCB at last came out of their drought for an IPL title in 2025, claiming their first-ever title. Shortly after, rumors emerged that Diageo is mulling selling the franchise since the company does not view RCB as one of its core businesses. MD & CEO of Diageo India Praveen Someshwar informed CNBC-TV18 last month: "RCB is an exciting business, but it is non-core for Diageo." Earlier reports had stated that Diageo might sell RCB for approximately $2 billion (about ₹17,762 crore), though the firm hasn't substantiated any valuation. "We don’t comment on market speculation," said a Diageo spokesperson. Also Read | Will RCB Join SA20? Graeme Smith Comments on the Team’s Future Poonawalla's Cryptic Confirmation In the beginning, Adar Poonawalla had shunned making any statements when the news initially came out. But now, he has let out a sure indication on social media about his intentions. "At the right valuation, @RCBTweets is a great team," Poonawalla wrote, affirming his genuine interest to buy RCB. Citibank's appointment as transaction advisor is a step that indicates that the transaction may proceed if both sides reach agreement over the valuation. Potential Deal Before IPL 2026 The ultimate result will be based on the price talks between Poonawalla and Diageo. With the brand value of RCB at a record high following their 2025 victory, the sale is likely to generate huge interest in the cricketing and corporate fraternity. If the deal is concluded soon, Adar Poonawalla may turn out to be the new owner of Royal Challengers Bengaluru ahead of the commencement of IPL 2026, offering fans one more reason to rejoice.
