Shafali Verma led Haryana from the front as they sealed a spot in the quarterfinals of the U23 One Day Trophy. The Indian opener, who featured in the Women's Premier League (WPL) final on Saturday, flew from Mumbai to Guwahati for the tournament. The 21-year-old, who had dominated the domestic season, returned to captain Haryana U23 in the tournament. Her team faced Karnataka, led by her Delhi Capitals teammate Niki Prasad. Batting first, Karnataka posted 217, thanks to Mithila Vinod’s 90 off 87, while other batters chipped in with small cameos. Captain Niki Prasad managed only 12 off 21 balls before falling to Gulshan Ali. Playing her first match in the U23 One Day Trophy, Shafali came into the attack in the 40th over when Karnataka had already lost four wickets. She struck twice in the 44th over, removing Saloni and wicketkeeper Soumya Verma off consecutive deliveries. She then returned for the 46th over and dismissed Namita D’Souza with her first ball to complete a hattrick. The off-spinner finished with figures of 3/20 in four overs. Fresh from winning the WPL, Amandeep Kaur also impressed with 2/32, while young left-arm spinner Triveni Vasistha took two wickets. In response, Haryana lost both openers early. Shafali departed after making 18 off 12 balls, while Reema Sisodia managed to score 11 off 17. Both fell to Namita D Souza, who finished with 2/43 in her six-over spell. Haryana, though, steadied the chase with half-centuries from former U19 World Cup winner Sonia Mendhiya and Tanisha Ohlan. The duo guided the team to a six-wicket victory. A season to remember for Shafali Verma After a below-par international season, Shafali was dropped from the Indian ODI squad in favour of Pratika Rawal. However, she responded with a dominant domestic season. Starting with the Senior One Day Trophy and the One Day Challenger Trophy before the U23 One Day Trophy, Shafali was unstoppable. In the Senior One Day Trophy, she scored 527 runs, including a high score of 197, and also took eight wickets. Haryana reached the quarterfinals before losing to eventual finalists Bengal. She continued her form in the Challenger Trophy, scoring 414 runs in five matches, including three half-centuries and a hundred, far ahead of the second-highest run-scorer, Vrinda Dinesh (217 runs).
