It was he who encouraged Ashwin to switch to off-spin from batting. However, the senior is in total disbelief, saying that he got to know the decision at the last minute. Despite Ashwin clarifying the main reason, Ashwin's father felt that he was humiliated. He said, "Retiring is his wish and desire; I cannot interfere with that, but the way in which he gave that, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation. No doubt about it (an emotional moment for the family) because he was on the field for 14-15 years. The sudden change, retirement, gave us really kind of a shock. At the same time, we were expecting that also because humiliation was going on. How long can he just tolerate all those things? Probably, he would have decided on his own." Notably, Indian Test team captain Rohit Sharma stated that Ashwin would prefer to retire if he was not in use for the team.
