The last and the final Test of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 will commence on Thursday at The Oval. India is 1-2 down in the five-match series. They will lose their first Test series against England since 2018 if they lose or draw this game. Though this young Indian side has fought well, particularly with the bat, there are some evident issues that need immediate attention. The key concerns have been bowling and team choice. India can still make a comeback and draw the series 2-2. But for that, they must make a few wise moves in this last Test. 5 Key Moves India Must Make at The Oval Dhruv Jurel Must Perform Like Pant at the Oval Rishabh Pant was India's finest batter in this series. He played four matches and scored 479 runs at an average of 68, and he scored two centuries. Now he has injured his right foot and is unavailable, and Dhruv Jurel will be replacing him as wicketkeeper. Jurel is also a fine batter, but the tension of facing such a crucial game won't be easy to handle. Nevertheless, India requires him to hold firm. In four Tests that he has played so far, Jurel has scored 202 runs with an average of 40. These figures are encouraging ones. With the support of coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill, Jurel will have to attempt to make a strong impression in this do-or-die match. Indian spinners tend to get under any team's skin, in any weather. England is also not particularly good against spin, particularly over long periods. If India's pacers are not picking up wickets, Shubman Gill needs to have faith in his spinners and give them more overs. Washington Sundar has appeared sharp but was introduced into the bowling very late during the Manchester Test, only in the 68th over. Over three matches, he has bowled just 70 overs and has picked up 7 wickets. To compare, Ravindra Jadeja has bowled almost twice as much, 136 overs, and picked up 7 wickets as well. Apparently, Sundar is not being utilized to the fullest. Indian skipper Shubman Gill faced a lot of criticism for not introducing Washington Sundar early in the Manchester Test. It will be crucial for Gill to make the right use of the assets that he has. Kuldeep Yadav Must Be in the Playing XI With Jasprit Bumrah being out, India requires a wicket-taking bowler who takes wickets on a regular basis. Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna have not played the role of match-winners in this series. They are either too costly or ineffective. Arshdeep Singh is likely to find a place in India's XI, but this will be his debut Test and hence, the lack of experience may make situation vulnerable for team India. Here comes the role of Kuldeep Yadav who is a kind of spinner who can shatter partnerships and inflict pressure. In his 13-Test career, he has picked 56 wickets. His most recent Test was in October 2024. Although it's been a while, Kuldeep can still be the X-factor that India requires for this match. Also, he is known for causing trouble to the English batters, hence, his inclusion in the XI will help India build pressure on the hosts at The Oval. Bumrah was the only one who was tight with an economy rate of 3.04 runs an over. Siraj has conceded runs at 4 an over, Akash Deep at 4.28, Shardul at 5.33, and Prasidh Krishna at 5.34. Anshul Kamboj, who made his debut in the previous match, conceded runs at 4.94 an over. These high economy rates enable the opposition to continue scoring and apply pressure on India's batting. The pace unit must concentrate on bowling tight lines and not conceding easy runs, particularly in the important sessions. Must Pick the Right Playing XI One of the most discussed points has been India's playing XI selections. Coach Gautam Gambhir has selected too many all-rounders, and this has led to imbalance in the team. Shardul Thakur, selected as an all-rounder, bowled only 11 overs in a match. Washington Sundar, also, has not been provided sufficient overs with the ball. Now is the time to go for specialists. India has to release Shardul and introduce Kuldeep Yadav. That would result in three spinners (Jadeja, Kuldeep, and Sundar), three pacers (Siraj, Akash Deep, and one of either Arshdeep, Anshul or Prasidh), and five proper batters. That gives the team a better opportunity to get 20 wickets and also have a good batting group. India can still salvage this closely contested series by finishing on a high. But for that, they need to learn their lessons from the past and make the right decisions in this last Test. Whether it is believing spinners more, playing specialists rather than bits-and-pieces cricketers, or supporting emerging players like Jurel, all their actions matter now. The Oval Test may determine the way this new Indian team led by Shubman Gill will proceed. If they do things correctly, a 2-2 series draw would taste like a grand victory.
