Punjab Kings began IPL 2026 with commanding performances, proving to be one of the strongest teams in the tournament. The Shreyas Iyer led side had a brilliant run of six successive victories and remained undefeated in the first seven matches of IPL 2026. PBKS quickly emerged as the top contenders for a playoff berth, after their stupendous bowling performances and setting a record by chasing the highest ever total in the IPL history against Delhi Capitals. Their streak abruptly ended with the loss to Rajasthan Royals in their eighth match and after that, Punjab Kings experienced a catastrophic phase of six back to back defeats, pushing them out of the top four places in the league. Although they managed to win their final league game against Lucknow Super Giants, they narrowly missed out on a playoff spot as they finished fifth in the points table with 15 points. Here are the four major reasons behind Punjab Kings' disastrous finish to the IPL 2026 season. 4 Major Reasons PBKS Failed to Qualify for IPL 2026 Playoffs Weak Bowling Attack Hurt PBKS Badly Punjab Kings really struggled in the bowling department in the second half of the tournament. The bowlers conceded runs frequently and couldn't defend the totals. Despite trying different bowling combinations, the team failed to settle for a balanced attack. Their star pacers Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Lockie Ferguson, all registered an economy of above 10. PBKS suffered a lot in the middle and death overs with the opposition scoring at will under pressure. They became the side who conceded 200+ 9 times in a single season in a T20 tournament, the most by any team. The inconsistency in their bowling attack became one of the major reasons for their faltering playoff aspirations. Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, and captain Shreyas Iyer helped their side on a consistent basis. The attacking batting of the above helped PBKS achieve great victories in the first half of the tournament. The collapse of the top order in the second half put a lot of pressure on the middle and lower order batters. They were never able to put on big scores in the second half of the league stage. Lack of solid starts even affected confidence. PBKS Never Recovered After First Defeat Punjab Kings had all the confidence in the world during their win streaks, however after suffering their first defeat to the Rajasthan Royals PBKS' campaign came to an end as they kept on losing six matches in a row. They had to pay the price by not being in the top four and several of their players losing confidence. While other teams got better, Punjab were a team that was very slow in responding. They never recovered from a defeat.
