Usman Khawaja has been one of Australia's most reliable Test openers. He has scored runs in adverse conditions and has played numerous match-winning innings. Amongst his recent feats has been a double ton against Sri Lanka in Galle. But apart from that innings, his form in Test cricket has declined miserably. Since 2024, he has scored just two fifties. Khawaja was dismissed for a duck in the first innings of the World Test Championship (WCT) Final 2025, after being sent back by Kagiso Rabada. Later, in the second innings, the southpaw was once again dismissed by Rabada for six. At the age of 37, with new talent in the pipeline, the selectors may now choose to look elsewhere and prepare a squad for the next WTC cycle. There are enough other good players in Australia who can replace him. He has played 17 first-class matches and compiled 1012 runs at an average of 34.89. He has two hundreds and six half-centuries to his credit. He impressed one and all in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) few months ago, where he played two Tests against India and made a gritty fifty. Although his average is not too great, he impressed by making a stunning century against India in a warm-up game last season. Konstas was also included in the team for the WTC Final 2025, which indicates the selectors have already faith in him. His attacking mindset is well-suited to current Test cricket, and as he is young, he can be a long term asset for the Australian side. Marcus Harris Image Source: Getty Images Marcus Harris has been at the doorstep of Test cricket for several years now. He has played 183 first-class games, amassed 12,438 runs, and has an average of 39.99. His career features 32 centuries and 52 half-centuries, which establishes his consistency and capacity for playing long innings. While Harris has played 14 Tests for Australia, he has yet to be awarded a long run. Most people believed he would take David Warner's place after his retirement, but other players were preferred by the team. Nevertheless, Harris continued delivering. He's been in terrific form in this year's County Championship, making three centuries for Lancashire. He's a left-hander like Khawaja and provides the same type of consistent approach. If selectors need someone solid with experience, Harris may finally get his break. However, with the sandpaper scandal in 2018, his career went haywire. He hasn't represented Australia since 2019. Nevertheless, Bancroft refused to give up. He has kept on scoring bountifully in domestic cricket. He has represented the state of Victoria in 176 first-class games and accumulated 11,311 runs at a rate of 38.60. He also possesses 31 centuries and 40 half-centuries, having an excellent conversion rate when he gets started. If the selectors are interested in an opener who has already played Test cricket and whose domestic form has been impressive, Bancroft would be the surprise return story of the following WTC cycle.
