The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to leave behind a trailblazer in the position of captaincy of the Indian women's cricket team, Harmanpreet Kaur. She was made the captain in 2012, and under her captainship, as many as 145 games were played by India in all formats, with a win-loss record of 87-51. With a disappointing 2024 Women's T20 World Cup, where age (35) now does become an issue, the BCCI now feels that time has come to seek a new leader - someone who can take years like Harmanpreet did. Who might replace Harmanpreet Kaur? While in the men's team, nearly all players such as Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and even Ruturaj Gaikwad have led the team in different formats over the past two years, this is not the case in women's cricket. Since 2020, the women's side has had just three captains - one is Harmanpreet Kaur, another is Mithali Raj who retired recently, and the third is Smriti Mandhana. It is hard to predict the best fit since few players have been entrusted with the opportunity to lead the team. In the Women's Premier League, so far only two Indian players-Harmanpreet and Mandhana have led their respective sides. Leaving a limited pool of choice for the current squad, Smriti Mandhana is now the vice-captain is the first option, followed by Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma. There's no reason why she can't be the leader in all formats. She is the best batter India has in all formats, and in cricket, the best batter is usually made the captain. She has already led Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women to the 2024 WPL title which makes her a quality leader. She is, without a doubt, the most capable captain. Jemimah Rodrigues Promising youngster at 24, Jemimah is the youngest option. She has already played 137 matches for India, which makes her one of the most-experienced players after Mandhana. Both Tests and ODIs techniques make her successful, and T20 has significantly improved this year to make her one of the most aggressive players in the team. Jemimah is the vice-captain of the Delhi Capitals women's team and can be drafted to be their captain in the next season. She has the potential to be a captain for ten years, and former India captain Mithali Raj has preferred her over Mandhana. Deepti Sharma Deepti Sharma, India's best all-rounder, often compared to Ravindra Jadeja, can win matches with both bat and ball and is among the top five all-rounders in T20Is and ODIs. Deepti is the most experienced player in the team after Harmanpreet, having debuted in 2014. She, like Mandhana and Jemimah, is another vital player for India. She is one of the vice-captains in UP Warriorz in WPL. She has hardly had experience in leadership, but her reading of the game and ability to handle pressure make her a good contender.
