The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a crushing defeat in their opening match of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). The Rajasthan Royals (RR) outplayed them by eight wickets at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Monday, March 30. The match completely turned against CSK from the moment of the toss. The team lost control of multiple situations while making multiple mistakes which they could have prevented. The Men in Yellow must quickly review these errors to avoid slipping further. CSK's batting order: Ruturaj Gaikwad had earlier stated that he and Sanju Samson would open the innings. The decision became difficult to understand because Dewald Brevis suffered an injury which made everything more complicated. CSK chose to continue with their original strategy but they ended up suffering negative consequences. Gaikwad consumed nearly two overs in the powerplay, which should have been CSK’s best phase to gain momentum. The two players both face difficulties when facing moving deliveries, which Rajasthan Royals used to their complete advantage. The team should have started Matt Short as their opening batsman after he made the playing XI while Ayush Mhatre looked out of place at No. 3. Shivam Dube was pushed down the order below Sarfaraz Khan and Kartik Sharma. The Super Kings had already lost their chances of winning when he came to bat. Composition of the Super Kings' playing XI: CSK also included one extra bowler in their playing XI. They used four seamers to field their team because they chose to bat first, which included Matt Henry, Anshul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed, and Jamie Overton. The team lost their chance to use Prashant Veer or an additional batsman to boost their roster strength because of this combination. The bowling setup becomes more uncertain because Kamboj, Khaleel, and Henry need the new ball to reach their maximum performance level. Ravindra Jadeja extracted significant turn in the first innings, but with Noor Ahmad as the only specialist spinner, CSK failed to take advantage. CSK's shot selection: CSK lost several central batters because they selected inappropriate shots to play. Samson showed no concern for his safety when he attempted to hit Nandre Burger's delivery across the line, while Gaikwad went too far the other way by giving himself too much room against Jofra Archer.
