India's U19 World Cup champion G Kamalini took to the field for her Women's Premier League (WPL) debut on Thursday, February 18, for Mumbai Indians against Gujarat Giants. She became the youngest ever player in the history of the league at a mere 16 years of age, beating Shabnam Shakil's previous record. Prior to the match, Kamilini was presented her team cap by retired cricketer Kiran More. Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt, senior players, cheered for her in the team huddle. She was the third-highest run-scorer at the end of the tournament with 143 runs from seven matches at a strike rate of 104.37. She was a part of the semi-final against England by scoring half-century and added eight runs in the final against South Africa. Her U19 teammate, VJ Joshita, recently became the youngest player to play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the WPL. In her debut WPL match, Kamalini went unbeaten on four runs. She made a strong impression by scoring a boundary off her first ball, which was bowled by Priya Mishra. Kamalini was born in 2008 and also demonstrated tremendous energy on the field. Gujarat Giants Women kept losing wickets at regular intervals and the Gardner-led side were bundled out for 120 runs. MI Women chased down the target of 121 in just 16.1 overs, thanks to a blistering knock of 57 runs by Nat Sciver-Brunt. Debutant G Kamalini came out to bat when Mumbai needed seven runs and hit a boundary on her first WPL delivery. Hayley Matthews, 26, was named Player of the Match for taking three wickets and scoring 17 runs.
